Our houses using fantastic felt (Year1 work, 2006-07)
Class 7 have being doing lots of work about their house so we decided to recreate their favourite thing from home in felt the problem was they had to make the felt.
The children in class 7 have been talking about their home as part of our topic on homes and castles. We have talked about likes and dislikes from home. Described what kind of house we live in and who lives at our house. They have painted their house and then they made a 3 dimensional house practising their cutting and folding skills.
The children were asked to draw a favourite thing from home, unaware of the surprise what took place on Thursday 5th October. A textile artist Mrs Mitchell was invited to work with class 7 to recreate their pictures in felt. But first they had to make the felt. Some of Class 7 explain how...
"We chose the colour. We ripped the felt and put it on the square .We put the felt on the mat we put the water on the felt. We rubbed the soap on the felt. Then we rolled it up then we took it off the mat and put it to dry."
"We had to pick our felt colour and we had to make our felt into a square and after that we put a net and after that we had to scrub some soap and after that we had to scrub it with our thumbs. We had to role it and then we had to put it to dry."
"First we have to choose some fabric and we have to make three sausages. Then we make a picture. When we have finished we put a net over the picture then we put some hot water on the picture then we rubbed soap on."
"First of all we chose a colour for the background and then we chose a colour for the picture and then we rolled the felt into some sausages and then we stretched the felt. And then we pilled the sausages on top of each other. Then we put this white net on and put water and soap on it. We patted it down with our hands."
"Making felt is good because it feels nice You have get some wool for the background. We have to make a picture. Then we have to rub the soap in. We rolled it over so we could make it flat."
